Today we had our first rotations of Daily 5. No, we don't do "Daily" 5 every day (I know the name is misleading); just once a week and usually on Fridays.
Daily 5 is where the students rotate through different literacy centres. Usually there will be 4-5 centres that the students rotate through. Here are the 4 centres we rotated through today:
At "Work on Writing," the students get their journals and a pencil and walk around the room and write down words or draw pictures of things they see. They can go to our word wall where we have seasonal and religious words posted, or they can check their desks, the kitchen centre, the board, and other places where there are words or photos.
At "Meet with the Teacher," the students meet with me (Mrs. Jackson) and we do an activity. Today we were working on letter "e" because we just learned that. We were practicing how to print lowercase letter "e" on the whiteboards.
At "Word Work," the students practice letter work. Today the students were working on recognizing letters and their sounds. They chose a blue letter and if they knew the name and sound, they told our parent helper that. If they didn't know the name, the student put a sticky note on that letter on the wall. Then, they sang the alphabet until they got to their sticky not and figured out what letter it is. Once they know the letter and sound, they cover it with rocks to learn the shape and space of that letter.
At "Listen to Reading," the students listen to books being read. The students are asked comprehension questions throughout the book to engage students and help them gain interest and understanding in the story. **This is a great idea to practice this at home. You can read a story to your child and on every page ask a few questions and talk about the illustrations and what was just read. This will help your child in the long run in the future.**
